Belonging
2023
Belonging is not a single journey, nor is it a straightforward one. It’s an ever-changing process. This animation explores feelings of longing, sadness, discovery, and connection, in the search for self-acceptance and a sense of belonging.
Conversations
2022
The government-funded Social Action Inquiry Scotland wanted to explore how communities could better work together to facilitate local change. This eye-catching motion design animation was used across social media to raise awareness of the project and invite participants to join a new conversation on local social action.
Generation Pandemic Puppy
2021
Generation Pandemic Puppy reflects a real-time narrative rooted in the first UK Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. It highlights an emerging animal welfare crisis affecting domestic pets. It uses data, emotive imagery, graphic design, sound, and motion, and ends with a call to action. The work was produced as part on my Honours degree at Abertay University.

Graphic Design
My approach to graphic design is about knowing when to use good design rules on layout, colour, typography, and shape language, and when breaking them helps to punctuate a narrative.

Adding sound and motion to data dramatically reveals key point on the information presented.

Infographic Design
Numbers by themselves are just numbers. Applying narrative, imagery and graphic design principles to infographic design helps to creates an accessible visual interpretation of the data.

Motion Design
Storytelling here uses a three-part narrative structure to identify the key message, its problem and solution and a call to action. The infomotion structure uses visual imagery, graphic design principles, music and spoken and narrative (sound), and motion design to build a relatable and engaging multi-sensory audience experience.

NARRATIVE & EMOTION

The digital media superhighway is a busy one. Content creators and their audiences have only a few fleeting seconds to engage with each other. My work embraces graphic design, motion design, and brain psychology to bring empathy into narratives that resonate with an audience long after the story has unfolded.
Empathy is vital to the wellbeing of society. Loss or lack of empathy weakens social vitality and survivability, and as a digital media artist building empathy in narrative design is crucial to connecting with my audience.
The three pillars I use in building empathy and lasting engagement are having a clear and relatable narrative, an art aesthetic with good visual clues, and sound and motion design all building towards an immersive experience.
